December 2, 2011

Two plane crashes in the Chicago, Illinois, area within days of each other have left seven people dead and two injured. According to KMOV Channel 4 News, four people died in the first crash and three perished in the second.

The first crash happened on Saturday, November 26, 2011, at approximately 10:30 in the morning, in a field near the northwestern suburb of Crystal Lake. A spokesman for the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), Elizabeth Isham Cory, confirmed that the Cirrus SR-22 aircraft was flying without instruments by “visual flight rules” when it went down without radio contact. The crash killed all four people aboard, including a Wheaton College student. The National Transportation Safety Board is heading up the investigation into the accident.

The second accident occurred two days later on Monday in the nearby suburb of Riverwoods. Authorities say they believe the plane went down just before 11:00 PM, in the backyard of the home. Cory commented the aircraft was carrying a medical patient, his wife, a paramedic, a flight crew of a pilot, and co-pilot. She stated the plane had taken off in Georgia and had radioed about fuel troubles just before the crash occurred. The two survivors were last listed in stable condition.

November 18, 2011

For the second time in almost a decade, tragedy has struck Oklahoma State University at the hands of a plane crash. It was announced today that the women’s basketball coach, Kurt Budke, and his assistant, Miranda Serna, were killed when their aircraft that went down in Arkansas. According to FOX News, the crash happened around 7:00 PM Thursday night near Perryville, Arkansas.

Authorities with the Perry County Sheriff’s Department say that the plane went down in a steep and heavily wooded part of the Winona Wildlife Management Area. They confirmed that two others–the pilot and another passenger–also perished when the Piper PA-28 went down. The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) sent investigators to determine the cause of the crash, but stated it could take up to nine months to complete the investigation.

The tragedy comes a decade after ten players from the men’s program died in a plane crash returning from a game in Colorado. The plane had been donated to the program by a booster and had not undergone regular maintenance inspections. After it was determined the plane had gone down due to a mechanical failure, the school implemented a policy of every plane athletes board having to go through a heavy inspection. It is unknown if the same policy applied to coaches and if the plane that just went down had undergone and inspection.

October 7, 2011

Two plane crashes within weeks of one another in the small Utah town of West Jordan has claimed the lives of three people. The Salt Lake Tribune reported Wednesday that the most recent crash occurred the day before, and another preceded it three weeks prior.

The first accident occurred on September 15 when a small aircraft approached the South Valley Regional Airport. For an unknown reason, the plane crashed next to Columbia Elementary School. Luckily, no students were injured, but the pilot of the plane and his dog perished in the crash.

Tuesday’s accident happened as a plane was taking off. The owner and passenger on board the aircraft, a 40-year-old man from Manti, Utah, had just purchased the plane and had aspirations of learning to fly and get his pilots license. He and a 28-year-old flight instructor were attempting to move the plane closer to a flight school when they had trouble and the plane went down. The owner died at the scene, while the pilot died a day later form massive injuries.

Investigations into both accidents are still currently ongoing with the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and other agencies.

The Aviation Injury Lawyers with Nurenberg, Paris, Heller & McCarthy have decades of experience handling all types of aviation accidents within their team of caring professionals. In fact, senior partner with the firm, Jamie Lebovitz, recently spoke in a news interview on the causes of aviation crashes and concerns one should have when flying.

August 26, 2011

A 51-year-old Pataskala, Ohio, man piloting a single engine plane was killed after the aircraft crashed shortly after take-off Thursday afternoon. According to 10 TV News, the plane was a small, experimental aircraft that was about the size of a bathtub.

The man took off just before dark from the Newark-Heath Airport and authorities believe a mechanical malfunction of some kind occurred shortly thereafter. Witnesses stated seeing the aircraft spiraling downward out of the sky and hitting a tree as the plane crashed into the backyard of a home, barely missing the structure.

First responders to the scene described the plane as totally demolished, but could see the pilot alive inside. They tried to help the man from the wreckage, but they were unable to free him from the mangled debris. They stayed with him, trying to keep him conscious until paramedics arrived, but was pronounced dead.

Studies have found that the size of an aircraft has direct correlation with its chances of a crash. Numbers provided by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) show, the smaller the plane, the greater the chances of a crash occurring.

July 1, 2011

A Sharpsville, Pennsylvania, man is dead and an Ohio pilot is injured following a plane crash that occurred near Gustavus, Ohio, last Sunday afternoon.

According to a report by the Star Beacon, the victim was attending a family get-together that day at a private airfield in Trumbull County. The 1946 single-engine 8A Luscombe took off from the location around 3:00 PM, heading south. It then banked and made a 180 degree turn, flying north at low altitude. Witnesses say they heard the engine stall and the aircraft began to fall. A wing caught the ground, forcing the plane to crash nose first and split open at the side.

The passenger, 30, was declared dead at the scene. He was the owner of a local ice cream shop, and is survived by his wife and daughters, a 2-year-old and 6-month-old twins. The pilot was transported to St. Elizabeth Medical Center in Youngstown, Ohio with non-life threatening injuries.

Both the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) responded to the scene, along with local fire and police departments. The investigation is under way and is being led by the NTSB.

June 24, 2011

A middle-aged couple from Franklin Lakes, New Jersey, died in central Ohio after crashing their plane into a cornfield on Sunday. The couple was the parents of a former Harvard student who gained notoriety several years ago after losing a book deal because of plagiarism in her first work.

According to the Associated Press, the accident occurred just before 9:00 AM at Rickenbacker International Airport in Columbus, Ohio. The couple arrived in Columbus on Friday, after flying in from Washington, D.C., following a visit with their daughter. They refueled and attempted to take off Sunday, but for an unknown reason the plane crashed into a cornfield at the end of the runway and caught fire, killing both on board.

The airport had to shut down for several hours after the crash, but was open again by Sunday afternoon.

Ohio State Troopers say that the man flying was a licensed pilot. The plane was registered to Buds Aviation in Franklin Lakes, New Jersey, according to Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) records.

The FAA and National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) have both sent in investigators to determine the cause of the crash; however, NTSB will be leading the investigation because there were deaths involved.

The Ohio aviation accident attorneys with Nurenberg, Paris, Heller & McCarthy have gained knowledge and experience from the many previous aviation cases they have handled.
Four people are lucky to walk away from an early morning plane crash. Salemnews.net is reporting that around 8:30 AM, a single-engine plane crashed while landing at the Salem Airpark.

The six-passenger Socata TBM 800 was approaching and managed to touch down just short of the runway. The pilot lost control of the plane, ran into a nearby hillside and the plane skid to a halt just off the runway. The plane was totaled with severe damage to one of the wings and a twisted propeller.

Ohio State Highway Patrol Sgt. Bret Henderson was quoted as saying “The pilot misjudged the runway. We’re lucky it wasn’t serious–it could have been a fatality.”

Two passengers aboard the airplane were taken to Salem Community Hospital to be treated for minor injuries. The other two passengers only suffered minor cuts and bruises. No one on the ground was injured.

According to reports by The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB), smaller planes are more prone to accidents and fatalities. There are over 22 fatalities per million flight hours in the private sector, compared to 4 in the commercial sector.

Nurenberg Paris represents passengers who were on American Airlines Flight 331, which crashed in Kingston, Jamaica on December 22, 2009. This crash was not, a some have suggested, a minor aviation “incident”, “runway excursion” or “mishap”. The pain, trauma and emotional anguish suffered by passengers on board this flight will likely affect them for a long time, and in some instances, for the rest of their lives. Moreover, this crash is another example of a deteriorating aviation system both in the United States and abroad.

It is important for passengers of this horrifying crash to research and find an experienced aviation law firm that they feel comfortable with and which will help them in the difficult months ahead. You do not want to become just another case or file number in a case load of hundreds. If you were injured, whether physically or emotionally, please take the time to focus on getting the help you need to recover. A law firm experienced in dealing with passengers who have experienced the trauma of an aviation crash can help you take the burden and stress of the legalities off your shoulders, so you can focus on what is most important: you, your family and your well being.

The complexities of an investigation into an aviation accident can be overwhelming. News media reports can often be misleading and inaccurate. Months, and sometimes years, of intense investigation by aviation experts and aviation attorneys (above and beyond the governmental investigating agency’s work) may be necessary to find the exact causes of an airplane crash. Often in the wake of a crash, the news reports focus on one specific cause. In reality the reason a crash occurs is often the failures of multiple events, including, mechanical, weather, air traffic control, training, pilot error, terrain, corporate on time pressures, and many other factors.

The Jamaican Civil Aviation Authority in cooperation with the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) is jointly investigating the cause of this accident. As reported in the news release of the JCAA on January 6, 2010
the flight data recorder has not indicated any malfunction with the operation of the brakes, spoilers or thrust reversers. The rate of deceleration appears to be normal for a wet runway. The investigation continues on the mechanical functions of the various avionics and systems.

Pertinent facts indicate that American Airlines is responsible for this crash. As the investigation evolves, other responsible parties may be identified. Unfortunately, this is not the first time American Airlines has been involved in landing accidents. Only a week before, an American MD-80 ran off the runway in Charlotte, NC. Also in December, an American MD-80 struck a wingtip on the ground when landing in Austin, Texas. Flight 331 is hauntingly similar to American Flight 1420, which crashed while attempting to land in a thunderstorm in Little Rock, Arkansas in 1999. Therefore, it is likely that investigators will focus on American Airlines safety policies with regard to the choice of landing in inclement weather versus diverting to a more suitable alternate airport. Important questions about pilot judgment, corporate on time pressures, long work days and why this pilot landed in these weather conditions, instead of diverting to Grand Cayman island, are all answers the passengers of American Airlines Flight 331 need answers to.

The aviation attorneys at Nurenberg Paris will be getting answers to these questions and many others during their investigation with experience aviation experts into the causes of this crash.
